Climate Control Using Desiccant

Have you ever dropped your phone in water and used clean, uncooked rice to dry it out? Can you imagine the amount of rice needed to dry out your house after water damage?!

Thankfully, Champion Cleaning Systems in Peachtree City has tools and technology to clean up water damage with no mess (and leftover rice.)

Desiccant dehumidifiers are one of the most effective ways of removing moisture from the air inside buildings. These dehumidifiers use materials or chemicals to attract and contain water vapors. This technology is well-known as being a proven alternative for achieving climate control at lower humidity levels and cooler temperatures.

Desiccant Defined

Salt is a desiccant. If it cakes in the shaker and won’t come out, that means it’s soaked up moisture from the air and the little grains of salt have glued themselves together.

A desiccant is a hygroscopic substance that sustains a state of dryness, or desiccation, in its vicinity. (The opposite is a humectant.)

Your most common experience is with those little 1 inch square packets packed in with new shoes. The manufacturer tossed them into the box to absorb any humidity during the shipping and storage time to limit the growth of mold and reduce spoilage. In this case, the desiccant is Silica gel, a porous sand.

How Desiccant Dehumidifiers Work

Desiccant dehumidifiers are especially well-suited for removing moisture from air at a low temperature and low humidity level. Air passes through the flutes of the corrugated material, contacting the desiccant. As the incoming air streams pass through the material, the moisture in water vapors is attracted to the desiccant, allowing only dry air to exit. The humidity-laden wheel rotates slowly into a second, smaller airstream which has been heated. The newly dried material then rotates back up to collect and absorb more moisture, restarting the cycle again.

The Appeal of Desiccant Dehumidifiers

The demand for desiccant dehumidification has increased in recent years. These devices offer: lower costs, higher efficiency, modular designs and safe materials. Using the exhaust heat generated by the condenser to regenerate the rotor wheel is what makes this type of dehumidifier so efficient. Desiccant dehumidifiers are also more eco-friendly because they do not emit greenhouse gases generated by compressors.

Many customers prefer the desiccant dehumidifiers because they are lighter and quieter in operation because of the lack of a compressor. When there are humidity-sensitive processes, or indoor air quality is a high priority, desiccant dehumidification is the most favorable option for climate control.
